Abdominoplasty is the medical term for a procedure that is more commonly known as a “tummy tuck.” This is a surgical procedure that is designed for two purposes: a) the removal of excess fats, and b) the tightening of muscles around the stomach area. The term “tuck” is used because it tucks in loose skin and excess fats inside the abdomen. These are usually performed on women who have developed excess skin and fat after having children or gaining weight. The procedure also removes, or minimizes, the stretch marks and scars in and on the abdomen. The tummy tuck is often performed at the same time as a liposuction, tubal ligation and/or bladder suspension.
A tummy tuck is similar to the liposuction procedure in that neither of these procedures should be used solely for weight loss. The reason is that a tummy tuck merely rids your body of fat and sagging skin rather than eliminating obesity. And, having the surgery doesn’t guarantee an immediate loss of weight. However, tummy tucks have developed into fairly common for both men and women who have previously lost a significant amount of weight. These patients are usually left with additional fat and saggy skin. The tummy tuck surgery is successfully used to provide a flat and tight abdomen.
There are several types of tummy tuck procedures. One form of tummy tuck, the endoscopic tummy tuck, is best for patients with excess fats but who have pores and skin that still has good elasticity. A small incision is made and a tiny camera is inserted into the abdomen. This allows the cosmetic surgeon to tighten the abdominal muscles. The physician can also remove extra fats through liposuction. The end result is very little scarring and excellent appearance. Another form of tummy tuck, the panniculectomy, is best used on those patients who have lost a great deal of weight and are left with a large overlay of pores and skin in the stomach. This procedure helps to eliminate the skin and pores as well as any excess fat.
Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is considered a major surgical procedure and is performed under general anaesthesia. Generally, the procedure takes three or four hours. An incision is made by the plastic surgeon above the pubic line. The doctor then removes all of the excess fat from the area. The skin and abdominal muscles are also tightened to create a tight and firm abdomen. The cosmetic surgeon also removes the stretch marks below the navel.

Immediately after the surgery, it will be painful to stand erect. However, the nursing staff will require you to get out of bed and move around. This helps with healing and blood circulation.
The recovery time from a tummy tuck procedure depends on many factors but is normally completed with a few weeks. Of course, the actual recovery time can be several months or as little as one week. However, in most cases, the patient is able to resume working within a couple of weeks. Residual healing will continue for several months.
The benefits of both a tummy tuck and liposuction are many. First, the procedures create immediate improvements in the appearance of the abdominal region of the body. For women who have had one or more children, this is often the only solution for regaining a tight abdomen. For some women, exercise is simply not effective. The second, and most important benefit, is the improvement to one’s self-esteem and self-confidence. By eliminating or lessening protruding belly muscle tissue, and tightening the muscle tissue, a woman’s self-esteem will almost be increased because of the improvement in how she perceives her beauty and physical appearance.
